SDLP North Down Representative Andrew Muir has expressed his shock in light of recent figures obtained from the Northern Ireland Office. Andrew Muir has discovered that the number of fireworks licences issued by the NIO to applicants from the North Down Borough Council area for the period from 1 to 31 October 2007 inclusive was twenty nine.

Commenting on the figure, Andrew stated “During the Halloween period it was obvious that many fireworks displays occurred across the borough but yet only twenty nine were legally licensed”.

Continuing, Andrew commented that “I call upon the Northern Ireland Office to urgently review fireworks legislation and enforcement procedures to ensure the eradication of illegal firework displays during Halloween 2008”.

We listened intensely to the benefits of organic farming and will use the arguments made by John to promote organic farming throughout wider society”

Muir works to stop land sell off at Ballykillaire

SDLP North Down Representative Andrew Muir has pledged his support for the Save our Open Spaces campaign recently established in opposition to North Down Borough Council’s plan to sell of a portion of its land at Ballykillaire, near the Sportsplex off the Old Belfast Road.

Andrew Muir has also lodged an official complaint contending that the Council has failed to follow its own policies and procedures and requesting a full Equality Impact Assessment of the decision.

Speaking about the matter, Andrew stated “I urge the Council to re-consider their ill thought out decision to sell off this land. As the number of green spaces continues to decline it’s particularly important that bodies such as North Down Borough Council take the lead in defending and safeguarding what public space that remains”.

Muir voices SDLP support for Europe

Andrew Muir, SDLP Bangor Branch Chairperson, this week spoke out after the debate at the Assembly on Monday 8 October 2007 concerning Europe.

Commenting after the debate, Muir stated “The cross community euro scepticism displayed at the NI Assembly on Monday was extremely disappointing. Both Sinn Fein and the DUP continue to delude themselves that Northern Ireland can exist without strong economic, social and cultural relations with its European neighbours. Northern Ireland needs the European Union more than ever with increasing economic interdependence and the environmental problems facing everyone on planet earth”.

Concluding, Andrew Muir stated “The European Treaty threatens no one. It simply allows effective decision-making following the enlargement to include the new Accession Countries and should be enacted without any further delay"

SDLP backs Baywatch

Andrew Muir, SDLP Bangor Branch Chairperson, has admitted that he is scouring the streets of North Down on Baywatch. He has, however, strenuously denied allegations that he trying to imitate David Hasselhoff.

Commenting, Andrew Muir stated “I am often infuriated when I witness blatant abuse of accessible car parking bays. The Baywatch Campaign is a vital campaign which seeks to end the abuse of parking spaces reserved for people with disabilities. It offers people a constructive mechanism to report the level of accessible parking bay abuse.”

Concluding, Muir remarked “I would encourage anyone who witnesses accessible parking bay abuse to complete a report form which can be downloaded from www.imtac.org.uk  I would also encourage companies who operate car parks to engage with Inclusive Mobility and Transport Advisory Committee (IMTAC) to ensure they are following best practice in relation to accessible parking for people with disabilities”.

Muir slams Bangor arsonists

SDLP North Down Representative Andrew Muir has slammed those responsible for an arson attack on a community hall in Skipperstone Street, Bangor on Thursday night.

Mr Muir said, “To attack a community hall like this is to attack the entire community and will not be tolerated. The actions of those responsible put lives at risk and I’m only too thankful that no-one was injured in this fire.

“My thoughts are with the many elderly people who were evacuated from the burning building. This was undoubtedly a frightening experience for all concerned and the thugs responsible really have a lot to answer for causing such trauma and shock.

“I urge anyone with any information on this attack to come forward to ensure police can stop those responsible from any further senseless behaviour.”
